According to the Essex County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT), “Research shows that 70%of individuals who abuse prescription and or over-the-counter medication get access to them from the medicine cabinet or household of a friend or family member. Raising awareness about prescription and over-the counter medication abuse and building a safe and healthy community are the key goals of this project” (2021).

Expired/Unused Prescription Drug Disposal Locations

The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has developed Project Medicine Drop as an important component of its effort to halt the abuse and diversion of prescription drugs. It allows consumers to dispose of unused and expired medications quickly, easily, and anonymously – seven days a week, 365 days a year – at prescription drug drop boxes located within the headquarters of participating police departments.
