MPD Firearms Information
Please take time to review the recently amended firearms statue (July 5, 2022)
Under 2C;58-3 (c) (11) and (d) the following has been amended: In order to obtain a permit to purchase a handgun or a firearms purchaser identification card, the applicant shall demonstrate that, within four years prior to the date of the application, the applicant satisfactorily completed a course of instruction approved by the superintendent in the lawful and safe handling and storage of firearms. The applicant shall be required to demonstrate completion of a course of instruction only once prior to obtaining either a firearms purchaser identification card or the applicant's first permit to purchase a handgun.

You must be 18 years of age to obtain a Firearms ID card, and 21 years of age for a Permit to Purchase a handgun.
Please follow the directions below:
- Visit the Firearms Application and Registration website. You must enter the site address as linked.
- The ORI# for Maplewood is entered exactly as follows: NJ0071100
- Complete the online application. You may complete the application using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer. When completing the application you will need the email addresses of 2 reputable references. Your references can be family members.
- After completing Steps 1-3, you will be contacted by a detective to make payment and obtain the FID card and/or pistol permits. Non-refundable payment is required to be made prior to the completion of the background as per NJAC 13:54-1.4.
- Please bring with you, your payment as well as your reference number provided after completing the S.T.S. 033 Form.
Payment must be made in cash, exact change only. Debit/Credit cards and checks are not accepted.
Firearm Fees
- Firearm ID Card: $50.00
- Duplicate / Change of Address ID Card: $5.00
- Permit to Purchase a Handgun: $25.00 per permit
- Fingerprinting: $52.69 (collected by outside agency Morpho Trust USA)
To make an appt, contact the Maplewood Detective Bureau and request to speak with the Detective in charge of Firearms at (973) 761-7925 or email us at firearms@maplewoodnj.gov.
- You will be receiving automated email updates throughout this new process.
- Once your application is complete, a station representative will contact you to retrieve your FID card and/or pistol purchase permit documents
- Please advise your references that the FARS system will email them the reference questions to be answered. Your references can complete the questions using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer. Please advise them to complete the questions immediately to progress your background investigation.
- The online application is applicant-driven. Please ensure that you have entered the best phone numbers for yourself and references as well as the best email address for yourself and your references.
New Applicants Requiring Fingerprinting
The FARS system will provide you with a printout for Morpho Track. It's on the applicant to schedule an appointment to have their fingerprints taken. Without prints being taken the process will not go through.
A Firearms ID card does not expire. Permit(s) to Purchase a Handguns are valid for 90 days from the date of issue. If necessary, a 90 day extension is available if the permit(s) that are about to expire are brought to Maplewood Police Department HQ (2) weeks prior to expiration. Do not let them expire or you will not be granted an extension.
Ensure you have completed all forms to entirety prior to submitting them.
