In the Township of Maplewood, we employ multiple notaries who can service you.

The fee to have a document notarized is $2.50 per notarized signature.

  1. Township Notaries are scheduled during the Township's hours of operation.  Notary Service is not available in the thirty (30) minutes after the building opens or prior to the time of closing. Appointments are strongly recommended.

  2. It is recommended that customers seeking Notary Service call the Township Clerk’s Office prior to their visit to ensure that a Notary is available at that time.   The Clerk’s Office can be reached by calling (973) 762-8120 ext 2100.

  3. New Jersey law requires that a Notary and the customer seeking notarization be able to communicate directly with each other. Township Notaries are not permitted to make use of a translator to communicate with a Notary Service customer.

  4. Valid government issued photo identification is required of any customer seeking notary service. Electronic identification is not accepted.

  5. The document(s) to be notarized must be signed in the presence of the notary. If more than one person is to sign, all persons signing must be present and provide valid government issued photo identification.

  6. Notary service is limited to two documents per person, per day.

  7. The Notary may, at their sole discretion, decline to provide Notary Service if the customer, documents, or circumstances of the request for Notary Service raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt or uncertainty.

  8. The Notary will not provide witnesses, and witnesses may not be solicited. In order to serve as a witness, the witness must personally know the person whose document is being notarized, and must be in possession of valid government issued photo identification.

Please note, our notaries will not notarize the following:

  • Documents in any language other than that understood by the Notary.
  • Certain public documents cannot be copied and notarized. Examples of these are: birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, divorces, Deeds, Wills, Living Wills, Living Trusts, Codicils, Depositions, Mortgages, Power of Attorney, or other Real Estate Closing documents and passports.
  • Electronic notarization.
